Sports Allegiances by City

For any sports fanatic that is moving to Houston or who currently lives there, six professional sports teams provide plenty of entertaining options. The city has a very rich sports culture that any sports enthusiast will enjoy. Let’s take a look at the great sports team that call Houston home.

Houston Astros

In 1962 the Houston Colt .45s joined the National League of Major League Baseball. Three years later the team name was changed to Astros coinciding with the team moving into the Astrodome. Beginning in 2000 the team started playing home games at Minute Maid Park. The team first played in the National League. They now play in the American League. The Astros won their first World Series title in 2017.

Houston Dash

The Houston Dash is the city’s female professional soccer team. Founded in 2013, the Dash has home games at BBVA stadium. The stadium was the first in the country used exclusively for soccer in a downtown community. The Houston Dynamo also compete there. 2018 was the Dash’s best year yet after nabbing nine wins.

Houston Dyamo

The Dynamo were formed in 2005 and is the city’s male, professional soccer team. In their first two seasons the team won the MLS Cup. The NBA’s James Hardin and iconic boxer Oscar De La Hoya are part of the team’s ownership. At one point the team had a 36 game winning streak.

Houston Rockets

The NBA’s Houston Rockets play basketball in the league’s Western Conference and Southwest Division. Founded in 1967, the team won back to back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995. The most notable player on the roster today is guard James Hardin. Hardin is a seven time all-star, and in 2018 he was the league’s most valuable player.

Houston SaberCats

Major League Rugby’s Houston Sabercats were founded in 2017. The team has played two seasons so far – 2018 and 2019. 2019 saw more success for the team, as they began playing in the city’s new Aveva Stadium.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans football team was formed in 1999, but the first season was their 2002 campaign. In 2011 the team won their first division title. Since then, they have come out on top in the AFC South four additional times. Prior to the Texans coming to town, Houston was home to the Houston Oilers. The Oilers left in 1996 and became the Tennessee Titans. NRG Stadium is where the Houston Texans have home games.

Houston is home to golf and tennis tournaments, great boxing, track and field and high school and collegiate sports. That is just a few of the athletic events always on deck in Space City. On top of the city’s six professional sports teams there is always some type of sports activity for its residents and visitors to enjoy.
